Staithes 190/9 Beat Forge Valley 102 all out by 88 Runs.

Staithes open title race wide open and leapfrog Whitby in the league table after beating top of the league Forge Valley at Staithes. Taking 1st knock, a half century from Dixon and 41 from Ward led Staithes to 190/9. In reply Forge Valley lost 3 wickets without scoring a run, and never recovered as Paul Theaker's 4-39 and Lee Oliver's 3-28 had them back in the pavilion for 102, 88 runs adrift.

2008 Season Report (to date) by Richard Ward

There is no hiding the fact that 2008 has been a poor season for both the Beckett and Cleveland league teams in their respective league campaigns. However, on a brighter note, the Cleveland League team managed to lift the Cleveland Cup for 2008 by beating Ormesby Hall B in the final at Staithes.

 Beckett League

The season has yet again been spoilt by the weather. The destination of the league title is still far from decided with Forge Valley in first position at the moment. However, I also think that Ebberstone & Staxton both have realistic chances of lifting the title. Especially with Valley still to visit us at Staithes on Saturday (if it stops raining). From our perspective it has been a season of what could have been. We have had injuries and we have also suffered with people missing a lot of games. Hopefully next year should be better as everyone is Staithes should be married now!! But these are just excuses. The fact remains that we feel that we should have beaten Sherburn, Cloughton & Whitby in the first six games of the season (if our performances had been up to expected standards) and if we had, then we would be there or thereabouts. But we didn’t and the fact is we have fallen just short most of the season. That said, recent form has been good and we are looking for a strong finish to the season and to finish as high as possible. Next year the emphasis is on building a bigger squad and trying to recruit a couple of players who can make the difference in the close matches.

 Cleveland League

Winning the Cleveland Cup has masked a poor season. However, it was a fantastic achievement from the lads to win it. They were of course helped by the inclusion of Jeff Morrison & Simon Bowes in the cup matches and this highlights the need to try and filter some more quality and experience down into this team for 2009. It was a shame that Horny had to miss the final itself as captain but Dan Burton played a captain’s role with an excellent 50 and a good spell of bowling. However, a 100 from Simon Bowes was the man of the match performance, closely followed by Jeff’s bowling. The league campaign has been poor and I think a total overhaul next year is not out of the question. Some of the young lads have not progressed and some of the senior players have quit during the course of the season. Losing players to the first team squad have also not helped and both the batting and bowling is well below the standards required. However, a win a Smiths Dock on Sunday should ensure survival and then we can start to plan for 2009.

On a brighter note, well done to Victor and Army. Our junior team lifted the junior league title again and we have a very promising crop of youngsters coming into the senior ranks next season. This bodes well for the future and should also put some pressure on some of the other young players who are underperforming at the moment
